Confirm the fuel arrangement at pickup, while the team can show you the car and record its condition. Ask which fuel it requires, what level is recorded at handover and what level is expected at return. Do not assume that every rental uses a full-to-full policy or that the cheapest pump option is appropriate.
For electric vehicles, use the separate Tesla charging guide. A petrol fuel policy should not be translated into a battery-return requirement without checking the agreement.
Record the starting point
Photograph the fuel gauge and odometer while parked. If the gauge does not match the handover record, resolve the difference before leaving. A clear starting record is more useful than trying to remember whether the indicator showed slightly above or below a mark.
Ask the team to show the fuel-door release and identify the required fuel. Follow the vehicle instructions and the agreed requirements. Do not guess based on another car from the same brand.
| Question | Answer to obtain |
|---|---|
| What fuel does this car require? | The correct type and grade for the actual vehicle |
| What is recorded at pickup? | The starting gauge level and mileage |
| What must be returned? | The agreed fuel level or other purchased arrangement |
| What if the level is short? | The applicable charge and any separate service fee |
| What proof should I keep? | Receipt and return photographs, where relevant |
Plan the final stop before return day
Choose a convenient filling stop along the return route and allow time for it. A station that is close on a map may be awkward to enter from your direction of travel. Do not make a rushed detour that jeopardises the agreed return time.
Keep the receipt if you refuel. It records a purchase, but it does not replace the gauge reading or establish by itself that the return condition was met. Photograph the gauge and odometer again at handover, where it is safe to do so.
Compare prepaid arrangements carefully
If a prepaid fuel option is offered, ask what quantity or return condition it covers and whether unused fuel is refundable. Compare it with your expected use rather than assuming convenience is either always expensive or always worthwhile.
The FTC's rental fee checklist identifies fuel charges as a cost to consider. Your own quote should state the actual arrangement; this article does not establish a Pugachev fuel surcharge or prepaid product.
If something goes wrong at the pump
If you suspect the wrong fuel was added, stop and contact the rental team for instructions before driving or restarting the vehicle. Keep the receipt and explain exactly what happened. Do not try to solve the problem by adding another fuel or continuing in the hope that it will be harmless.
Keep the team contact with your rental documents. For the rest of the handover record, use the pickup and return checklist, and review the rental policies before collection.
