A security deposit and the rental price are different parts of a booking. Before collecting a car in Miami, ask how much is required, whether it will be authorised as a hold or processed as a charge, and which payment methods the specific booking accepts. Do not assume that a debit card, a credit card and cash are interchangeable.

Start with the rental policies and obtain the vehicle-specific details in writing. This is a record-keeping guide, not a promise of a particular deposit amount or bank-release time.

Separate three numbers

Write down the rental total, the deposit requirement and any amount already paid. Ask the team how these appear on your receipt and card account. That prevents a temporary authorisation from being mistaken for an extra rental payment, while still allowing you to query a transaction that does not match the agreement.

The FTC explains that rental companies may place a hold on available funds or credit. The amount and process for your booking must still be confirmed with the rental team and, where necessary, your card issuer.

Do not plan around an assumed release date

The rental team can explain its own release or refund action; the card issuer controls how the account displays and processes transactions. Ask both parties about their respective steps instead of treating a general estimate as a guarantee.

Keep enough flexibility for other travel expenses. If a card is declined, contact the issuer to understand the reason and ask the team which alternative arrangements it accepts. Do not repeatedly switch methods without confirming how any earlier authorisation will be handled.

Build a useful return record

Record the actual return time, mileage and agreed fuel or charge condition. Keep photographs and the acknowledgement of handover together with the contract. If there are later tolls or other agreed charges, request their itemised explanation separately from the deposit question.

Our pickup and return inspection checklist covers the vehicle record in more detail. The aim is a clear timeline, not a large collection of unrelated screenshots.

Ask about a discrepancy precisely

Send the reservation reference, transaction date, amount and whether it is shown as pending or posted. Include the relevant receipt, with unnecessary card details concealed. Ask what action has been taken and what remains for the bank to process.

Avoid describing every unfamiliar pending entry as a completed charge. Equally, do not ignore a posted amount that differs from your final bill. Matching the transaction to the written agreement is the practical first step toward resolving it.
