Before Ford Motor Company Foundation, in 1899 Ford started Detroit Automobile Company which got the name Henry Ford Company after reorganization in 1901. The concern didn’t do well, Ford quarreled with the other investors and resigned. The investors turned to Leland to estimate its equipment with a view to its liquidation. But Leland persuaded them to construct vehicles and started to manage the enterprise. At that time, it was renamed into Cadillac.

First steps

The first creation of this brand was made in October 1902. The next year in January it was exhibited in a New York motor show, where it was taken two thousand orders.

Mass production of this model began in 1903. It was very similar to the Ford Model A (not to be confused with the 4-cylinder Ford A of the late 1920s), but the engine on this sample was different from Leland. This was the case with the single-cylinder engine of about 10 hp, located under the front seat.

Single-cylinder models that had alphabetic indexes, according to that model, were produced until 1908. In 1905 a four-cylinder Cadillac D was added to them. In the same year, a light truck of model F was presented, becoming the first truck of the concern. The company proclaimed itself as one of the pioneers in the automotive industry, when a vehicle with a fully closed body coupe was built on a single-cylinder chassis — the first in America. It was called Osceola and was made in a single copy, becoming a personal auto of Henry Leland, but next year customers were offered a closed coupe of model H.

Vehicles standardization

The necessity of standardization in the automobile industry was started by Leland due to his experience of working at arms factories. In early 1908, three models K of 1907 were delivered to the British Royal Auto Club. They drove 40 km along the Brooklands Highway and were then completely dismantled. Their parts were thoroughly mixed and then the automobiles were reassembled — with only screwdrivers and wrenches — and the vehicles drove the 800-kilometer route without any problems. 

In 1909 the company was acquired by the famous Billy Durant, the founder of General Motors, but structurally it remained an independent concern and Leland kept being its President and General Manager.
